I really love Sally's books. She makes topics in history and science especially interesting. She explained that to write a book about a nonfiction topic, it's important to do some research--which means going to library! She also said that another great source of information is finding an expert you can interview. Sally told us that even though it can make you feel a little nervous, talking to an expert about a subject you want to write about can be extremely valuable. What great advice!
On Wednesday, October 16th, students in 1st through 5th grades met nonfiction author Sally Walker! Her presentations were focused around writing tips and the research process. She also told us some great stories, and shared some background about her books.

What a wonderful day! The Klise sisters, Kate and Sarah, visited Braeside School this past Monday. They shared many things with us, including some personal stories and some great ideas about how to write books of our own. Thank you for visiting us, Kate and Sarah! Kate helped teach the students about the elements of a story, and student volunteers participated in writing an original story. During the writing of the story, Sarah amazed with her accompanying illustrations! This week, it finally happened. It was the day Kindergarten had been waiting for since August 22nd. It was time to check out books! Of course, before checking out it was important to go over some important information. We went over the process of browsing books and making a choice, and checking out with a library card. We also talked about ways to make sure we are responsible with books. (Keep an eye out for our pet dogs but cats are probably okay.) Kindergarteners are busy at home this week reading their library books! Please remember that the book must be returned next Monday so that another book can be checked out. Next Wednesday, Kate and Sarah Klise will be visiting our school to give presentations to all students in grades K-5. We have been busy getting ready for their visit by becoming familiar with their books and learning some background information about them. We learned that Kate and Sarah are one year apart, and that they wrote their first book together when they were only 10 and 11 years old! It would be interesting to ask them about that book. I wonder if they still have a copy of it somewhere! The following Wednesday Sally Walker will be visiting students in grades 1-5! We've also been reading some of Sally's books and learning about her background to prepare for the visit. Sally writes about so many interesting things, such as stories from the American Revolution and the discovery of the coelacanth fish. We will definitely have a lot of questions to ask. I wonder about Sally's research, and what is was like to talk to real scientists to get information for her books. How did she arrange the interviews? We know that her father was a "great nonfiction storyteller." Other than being a storyteller, did he have any other jobs? Did any other people in Sally's family influence her interests in science and history? It will be so exciting to meet these authors! I don't know about you, but I can't wait!! |
AuthorHello! My name is Ms. Parker and I'm the librarian at Braeside School. A few of my favorite things to do: read books, drink tea, teach and learn in the library, go for a run outside on a super-hot summer day, paint animal murals, cook dinner with farm-fresh ingredients, daydream about the book I may write someday.
